Congrats to everyone! All the winners are truly amazing!
Why only one category for vendors? Crafters are the backbone of every faire, and comprise at least 50% of the content, so why only one category? Maybe next year consider costuming, pottery, jewelry, etc?
Thanks ~ness for the suggestion. We have a forum for talking about categories each year. That’s definitely something worth considering.
I was wondering if you looked at Washington State fair.
Hello everyone!!
As an avid Ren Faire junkie, author in Renaissance Magazine, and just a concerned citizen, I have to point everyone’s attention to the Sterling Renaissance Festival, in Sterling, New York. It seems that the top winners in the overall category are state level festivals. I see up there that the New York State Ren Faire won a spot…. and having been there (and to a few of the other “top” festivals), they can’t hold a candle to the Sterling Festival.
Some of these supposed festivals are held in parking lots, in public parks, in modified venues, etc. This is fine, because any Ren Faire is better than no Ren Faire, but it’s hard to get a truly consuming feeling when you have modern cinder-block building on asphalt-paved paths, etc.
In Sterling, the festival is set into 90 acres of woods. Paths are natural, buildings are period built using period materials, the setting is pure nature, the vendors must be able to demonstrate their trade right there in their little building (each vendor has their own small period built building), there is unusual period drink and cuisine, and the list goes on and on. It’s a big festival. There’s a huge attendance. The list of shows and activities (all period shows and activities, mind you… nothing modern for the sake of filling a spot) is greater than the New York State festival (and some of the others, too), and the list goes on and on.
I don’t work for the Sterling Festival, I don’t live there, but having been to a LOT of faires, all over the world, I can say that the Sterling Festival is one of the best that I have ever seen, ever. There are TONS of great festivals out there that didn’t make the list. Some of these are FAR better than top-5 winners. However, if anyone out there lives in the Northeast United States, you DEFINITELY owe it to yourselves to consider a day trip to the Sterling Renaissance Festival!! Google it.
Huzah!

Thanks Dave!
Yes. Sterling is not alone. There are indeed a LOT of great faires that didn’t make the list. In fact, most of my favorite faires are small ones.
Remember that this is a popular-vote contest. So next year, make sure you tell the other fans of Sterling to cast their votes as well.
@ness: different category for vendors is something we will talk about for this year awards, I will ask over on our facebook page if anyone has any ideas at to what they would like to see in category for this year at that time remind me about the vendors. Thanks for your thoughs
Faire Magazine will again post the winners inside the pages of our magazine. 2008′s were placed into Issue #2 (still available) and 2009′s will go into issue #5 (on sale at the end of March).
Huzzah to all the winners!
@ Black Fox: let me know me know when it one the stands and I will tell the fans
